art crush (v.1)

I am one of those (perhaps semi-uncommon) firm believers that art is incredibly valuable and relates to every single human being. As music reaches people and expresses the hearts and feelings and thoughts of other people, so does art. So I'm beginning a series that will pop up every now and then that features artists that I either have been obsessed with forever and am rediscovering, or artists that I newly discovered for myself and am absolutely loving. Hopefully this will inspire you to dig deeper into the art world and to incorporate the ideas and styles that these artists use into even your own work.

No better way to start off these series then with Pae White. I am absolutely astonished by this woman's work. The top piece can be found in MOCA in Los Angeles and whenever I walk under it I am amazed by the play on color and sly text and the use of material. It constructs not only a piece of art, but an experience. Her pieces are often defined by transporting the viewer into an imaginative experience, not leaving them just staring at a piece of unrelated work. The pieces are inherently related to the viewer because the viewer becomes a participant in them. And Lord knows I'm a sucker for large scale, installation art.

The bottom piece I wish I could have experienced, but reading the concept behind it and the artists intention was brilliant. She wanted to discover and explore what a rainbow would be like if you pulled it apart and created it in paint form. It resulted in this crazy color explosion that explores the power of color and also, color in relation to the environment.
