Pinterest has been blowing these things up. Trendy and "hipster" weddings always unquestionably have them atop the brides head. And people like me insist on wearing them in their college graduation announcements (hence the photo to the right). I will shamelessly admit that I love this trend. They are the perfect mix of girly and vibrant and effortlessness and spunk. And lets be honest, people wear hats and beanies and weird visors on their head all the time, wouldn't the world be so much happier if just we wore flowers instead? Amen to that.
I would say these are fairly painless and easy to make. My friends would laugh because they think I always say that about crafty things. But really. If you like hands-on artsy projects and flowers and perhaps Pinterest, this ones for you.
Flower crowns are the perfect craft to do with girlfriends or at a low-key Bachelorette party. I could totally see them being worn while walking around a beach town. And you know what, if you have a pocket full of confidence you could probably wear one of these just about anywhere. And well, when it comes to paying whatever ample amount of money it costs for someone else to make one, that's just plain ridiculous. Spend a little on supplies and buy some flowers from the market and you're good to go. Make one yourself, dangett.
Here's how:
Step 1: Get some pretty flowers. Easy enough, right? If you get a variety of types of flowers that mesh well together, they'll work perfect. I like to use Baby's Breath as a base, but if you have greenery or something more basic that would work too.
Step 2: (Top Middle) Gather all the things you need. I use (1) green floral tape, (2) a thicker wire that's easily able to mold, if you can find a green colored one you can skip a step, (3) thin green floral wire, (4) scissors, and (5) pretty flowers.
Step 3: (Top Right) Mold the thicker wire to a circle that would fit on top of your head and twist the ends to stay put. I make the wire so that it's a little bigger than your head, so when you put the flowers on it doesn't look too small. If you have green wire, great! If not, use green floral tape to cover the whole thing. Since I had a brown, copper thick wire, I used the green floral tape to cover it completely so that just in case the base wire showed at all, it was green not brown. This step is totally up to you, it isn't always necessary depending on how many flowers you put around the crown.
Step 4: (Bottom Left) Wrap the base layer of Baby's Breath (or any greenery of your choice) around the entire wire head piece using thin floral wire. Cut pieces of floral wire about 2 inches long and wrap it around the stem of the flowers to hold them to the base wire. Make it so that they cover a considerable amount of the head piece, but gaps are okay as well, you'll fill those in later. Make sure to cut off any excess stem that pokes out. This part takes the most time, but once you get the hang of it, it goes by quick and you'll learn tips as you go to speed up time.
Step 5: (Bottom Middle) Once you are done with the base, cut off pieces of your main flowers so that there is just a few inches of stem. Eliminate unnecessary leaves, cause you won't want leaves like crazy, just a couple at the top are good. Then, in the same way that you did the base layer, fill in gaps and stick the flowers where you feel they fit well. This is where your own style and aesthetic comes in. Play around with how many you put, how dense the piece becomes, and how spread apart the flowers are. I find it hard to believe that you can screw this up, if you use the right method it will look beautiful.
Step 6: I added in three deep purple lilies to make it feel more classy and unique, I tend to really love when there are focal points of flower crowns, so these were mine. But the fun part about making this yourself, if you can make it however you want and keep playing with it until you are in love with it... and until you can force your girlfriends to model it for you.
